An 8-day backpack trip from Spring Shores to Redfish Lake, June 17-24, 2005

Art, Carol, and John- Day 7

This trip was a long-time dream of my good friend Art. In fact, he originally conceived of it while we were going to high school together, over 30 years ago. He had done similar trips, like hiking from McCall to Cape Horn. But this would more than double the longest hike I had ever done.

We had chosen this date late last winter, when there was a paucity of snow in Idaho. Later, we had a wet spring with lots of snow up high, followed by a mild May without a lot of snow runoff. Now our trip was in danger of having too much snow, and/or too much runoff. Another complication arose when I chose to have surgery to remove two screws from my ankle during the only window in my summer calendar, less than two weeks before our departure. Then with a week to go, Art came down with the flu. So we did pretty much all our planning and organizing the day before we left. And I wore some less-than satisfactory boots. But enough background- on with the story-
