A good 60th birthday on Jughandle Mountain.

It was my brother Tom's birthday, so we had to get out. The problem was where? With all the snow we still had, we didn't know how far up the road we could get.

Happily, we got all the way to the Boulder trailhead. But as you can see, that's as far as we got.

We started off walking on the snow (in the parking lot), followed by the creek crossing on logs that were actually in the water....but sadly for the photographer, no one fell in. I was so ready...

Trailhead

On the trail to Louie Lake, there were a few bare spots, but the snow was in good shape and we were soon looking at our peak for the day.

But today was also about turning 60, so here's a picture of a bunch of old guys.

The sun was out and the sky was (mostly) blue. Tom was feeling if not young, expansive.

Dave was making photographs. You can see a few of them on his website.

It was windy on top, and the clouds were moving in. But there was still plenty to see.

Trailhead

On the right, Mt. Horrendous.

Plans are to head back in there in about a month....

Dave brought birthday cake.

It was too windy to light the candles, but nice enough to sit for a bit and think about a new decade.

Then it was back down. In the short time from here to the summit and back, the snow had softened enough to make for really great descending. Trailhead
For reference, I shot this on my way home after a Birthday Beer at Tom's. Our route came up the left ridge, then wove through the bare spots up high. The summit is about where it appears to be in the photo. Trailhead
