I had forgotten the challenge offered by Slab Butte.

With a predicted high in McCall of 87 or 89 or some such nonsense, we opted to do a shorter hike with an early start. So when we got out of the rig, the shadows were still long over the abandoned roadway.

Drifting sideways across the hillside, we laced together various meadows (although not flat meadows) until we got a peek at our objective.

Getting closer now.

And below, the lake and a view of the rocky hillside under the climb.

That's Granite Lake in the distance.

As Dave and I discussed, Ruby figured we were going up the dihedral, so got a head start.

The ridgetop was more rugged than I remembered, so Dave sat with Ruby while I ran up to the top. Summit panorama looking north, below.

Looking south.

It was such a nice day, we decided to have lunch on the left highpoint.

After lunch, we continued south on the ridge a bit until we found a suitable path down into the beautiful meadow.

Unfortunately, the beautiful meadow has broken glass and lots of empty beer cans, most likely provided by winter motor-sports enthusiasts (because the furrin' shepherds take better care of our wildlands).
