Tom is still healing from a broken hand suffered in a mountain bike crash, so we needed to do something one-handed, including the possibility of a slip-and-fall. The trail to Box Lake is mostly south facing, so it seemed a good idea. The trail had seen a surprising amount of use, so any snow was compacted to ice. But in addition, much of the trail was bare. Walk carefully, and up we go. |

After a steep initial climb, the trail mellows out and you can look south. But now there was more snow with which to contend. |

We were feeling good and the day was gorgeous, so we opted to go for a peak. I suggested Yockwah would be a good one. That meant leaving the trail. Not a real problem, but the deeper snow in places did make it more difficult to negotiate the deadfall. When we could, we avoided both. |

After you gain the ridge, it's a fairly flat traverse to this overlook of partially-frozen Box Lake. | ![]() |
There's our peak to the right of center. |

Post holing is tiring. |

Summit. With McCall and Long Valley in the background. |

Looking north. Pearl Lake is hidden somewhere in there. |

Looking south. And at our route home. |

Looking easterly. Granite Peak on the far left, and the granite cockscomb of Slab Butte to the right of center. |

Ruby knows the drill. |

Last look at the lake before dropping back to the truck. Note: Lick Creek road is in fairly horrible shape at the moment. Even going 25mph was asking too much. |
