Burnside Lake

An afternoon hike down memory lane.

I did part of this hike before with Kathy....somewhere around 45 to 50 years ago.... so I don't remember it well but it looked a little different......

We followed the trail to Duck Lake for the first quarter-mile, then turned left. This area was devastated by the 1994 Blackwell fire.

Trailhead

It was hard to decide whether to bust brush or rock hop. So we did both.

Trailhead

After doing most of the gain, there are meadows under Burnside Peak.

Trailhead

Wet meadows, even in September. But very pretty.

If the sky seems white, it is. We're still getting smoke from fires near Cambridge (amongst other places).

Trailhead

And there's Burnside Lake.

Trailhead

Burnside has fish in it. Dave landed a couple.

I caught some but couldn't land them. Feisty little buggers, they managed to throw my barb-less hook each time.

Trailhead

We had read a report that Burnside #2 (which I didn't know existed) had been stocked with arctic char. Better go investigate. This involved a fairly level traverse under some cliff bands and across small talus.

Trailhead

Right over there.

Trailhead
Gorgeous little lake. Trailhead

Incredible colors.

But no fish. At least none that liked what we were throwing at them.

Trailhead

And there's one more little pond shown on the map, sort of along a possible route home.

The shadow in the background is Beaverdam Peak.

Trailhead
The contour lines indicated a deep cleft through the cliffs. Sure enough, it's a way to get down without brush. Well, not to here, anyway. Then it was the same ol' bushwack back to the trail, only with fresh bushes. Trailhead
