Dave and I hiked this area about three weeks ago. It is so cool, we had to go right back for further exploration. In the mean time, it had snowed a bit. And this time, Art came! Our day started across the rocky area in the foreground. And that's Beaverdam Peak in the background, which Art and I had climbed on about this date back in 2006. |

This is what that rocky area looks like, close up. With a Ruby in it. And footprints! we were surprised to see sign of another human up here. The next day I found out it was our friend and fellow SAR member Caleb. Turns out he's as loony as we are. |

We call this little pond/lake Burnside III. Today, it was looking more like a skating rink. |

And this one, without the frozen surface, is Burnside II. |

Art had to satisfy himself that Dave and I knew what we were talking about when we said there were no fish. On the other hand, Art did catch a really fine pine tree. Unfortunately, pine trees are not always catch-and-release. So much for that lure.... |

With Art's disbelief put to rest, we were onward and upward to the upper basin. This really cool meander contained what the map showed as a small lake/pond. |

And we again followed the map to find this beautiful little tarn. And according to the map, there are others. |

And we found some not shown on the map. The only problem here is that now we have to repeat the entire hike when there is no snow. | ![]() |
After visiting that last tarn, we realized that we were really quite close to the 'real' Burnside Lake. Close, but no see-gar. That is a pretty vertical piece of ground between us. With snow on it. Maybe another day..... |

But it was all so beautiful we didn't care about the extra mileage to go back to the established route. |

Ruby loves the snow almost as much as the camera loves her. That's Sawtooth Peak. |

And that's Burnside Lake. Today was not a good fishing day at Burnside Lake. Our consolation prize was what Art determined is an absolutely perfect granite chair. Apparently, we're easy to please. |

We tried an alternate route on our return. Tried. And we lived to tell about it. |
